Rosie Richings: The person behind the business

Rosie Writing Space has been my pride and joy since 2009. It’s a resource for creative people that explores marketing and entrepreneurial support. It is about working around one of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur, feeling like there is never enough time and resources to accomplish all the ambitious ideas in your head. It’s also a friendly place where creative people, like you, can be reminded that they’re not alone in their everyday struggles to be creative while making it in the “real” world.

I’ve always been a writer, and this blog has always been my way of unraveling how I can use that part of my identity to find a place in this weird and wonderful world. Although I’ve figured out how to turn my passion into a business, I still feel like there’s so much left to learn.

Join me as I navigate my way through the ups and downs of being a creative person, and feel free to subscribe while you’re reading any blog posts that get your attention. Pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, take a sip or two, and kick back in a comfy chair, to truly appreciate the spirit of the Rosie Writing Space experience.

When I first started this blog … my life looked completely different

All I wanted to do was write; and I wasn’t sure how, or in what way.

I started to experiment with all the different types of writing. I wrote fiction, poetry, and plays in my spare time. I read a lot of books. What I didn’t expect was just how much this blog would change the direction of my life. When I was in university, I had the opportunity to work closely with a slew of not-for-profits. But what made me valuable is just how much I understood the rapidly exploding world of blogging and building an online presence. A colleague suggested that I write something for the company blog after she stumbled upon my blog in her spare time. And it was the most popular post they’d ever had.

My contract ended just in time for my university graduation.

Suddenly, my life revolved around my ambition to get my work featured on other peoples’ websites. The hard work, the hours spent having lunches with editors, and the tedium sending hundreds of emails to anyone who needed a writer paid off.

Then I started to get work … based on both my published work and my blog alone.

I do blog writing and editing projects that focus on not only disability rights but also causes that improve the lives of people with disabilities.

I was diagnosed with a type of neurodiversity called Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder) when I was 4 years old. My experiences as a person with DCD make me an extremely driven and motivated self-advocate. I also help people who are facing similar challenges. As part of my advocacy work, I’m currently working with a publisher, Jessica Kingsley books, on a book about my experiences growing up with Dyspraxia.

I’m both a panel member of Dyspraxia Magazine and a founding member of Dyspraxia Alliance, a support group by and for people with Dyspraxia.

Here’s what I want you to keep in mind

To be a creative person you have to manage rejection. It can feel like people who don’t get your creative vision. Because I want creative people like you to know…

I want you to know that I’ve been there, and I continue to face those challenges sometimes. Not to mention, that’s a sign that you are definitely in the right place!

With this blog, I hope to give you the strength, courage, and resources to persevere regardless of how things are going.

I believe that creativity is something that deserves to thrive and grow, so get out there and create something awesome, no matter what anyone else has to say about you or your work!

Yours truly, Rosie Richings

I believe that creativity is something that deserves to thrive and grow.
